چکیده

Water is the principal limiting resource for Californian Mediterranean-climate plants. The relationship between rainfall variation and the abundance and distribution of plant species was investigated at the Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve near Stanford University. Five years of rainfall data (1986-1990) were combined with a yearly census of plant species on a 100m transect to relate inter-annual variation in rainfall to changes in the vegetation on adjacent serpentine and greenstone grasslands. The four years of drought from 1986-1990 did not affect all species along the transect equally. Within the grasses, native bunchgrasses were less affected by four consecutive drought years than were the annual grasses. For non-native annual grass species, there was a significant interaction between substratum and drought on both species abundances and spatial dispersion of plants on serpentine soil. These species were more affected by drought on serpentine soil than was the common native annual grass, Vulpia microstachys. Dramatic changes in the distribution of non-native grasses in serpentine grassland were related to heterogeneity in the Mg/Ca quotient. Variation in responses of non-native grass species to drought in greenstone grassland was related to seed size; larger-seeded species were less affected by drought. It is suggested that drought plays an important role in structuring the plant community in serpentine soils at this site, and that the relationship between drought and serpentine vegetation requires further investigation.

Assessing benthic health of hard substratum macrobenthic community using soft bottom indicators and their relationship with environmental condition

This study aimed to assess ecological quality status of hard substratum macroinvertebrates communities of the Caspian Sea with three ecological indices and their relation with environmental factors. For this purpose benthic communities of the Caspian Sea basin were studied seasonally during 2014 in 8 sampling sites. Temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, nitrate, nitrite, silicate and pho...

Drought Monitoring Using Climatic Indices and Geostatistic Technique (Case Study: Hossein Abad Plain, Sarbisheh, Iran)

Of the many climatic events that influence the Earth’s environment, drought is perhaps the one that is most linked with desertification. Drought is the consequence of a natural reduction in the amount of precipitation received over an extended period, usually a season or more in length. Drought monitoring is an essential component of drought risk management. It is normally performed using vario...

Temporal and spatial distribution pattern of Bullacta exarata in a tidal flat at south shore of Hangzhou Bay, China

The distribution pattern of Bullacta exarata was studied in different seasons of 2004 at south shore of Hangzhou Bay, China. We found that the distribution pattern of B. exarata was aggregated in each season by Taylor's power regression and Iwao's plot regresses methods (P < 0.001). Based on two-way ANOVA analysis, the results indicated that the densities were significantly affected by the fact...
